The Caretaker Committee
Chairman of Ahoada West Local Government Area (AWELGA) of Rivers State, Hon Jerry Akuru, has expressed satisfaction at the reduced incidence of oil theft and vandalism of oil installations in the area.
Akuru who spoke to The Tide Friday in Port Harcourt said the rate of criminal activities in the local government area has drastically reduced and cases of illegal bunkering is also encouraging.
He said: “I am glad that the worrisome situation of oil theft and vandalism of installation within few months was reduced and the general crime wave has also come down.”
The council boss attributed the situation to the security initiative of the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, and charged youths to sustain peace in the area.
He urged those who were yet to embrace the amnesty initiative of Wike to take advantage of the programme to embrace it for their interest and that of the society.
Akuru who commended the governor for his wisdom in arresting the insecurity situation in the state stated that only peaceful atmosphere can attract investors and development to the area.
The CTC boss promised to sustain the peace initiative established in the state by Governor Wike, emphasising that Ahoada West has abundant potentials not only in oil and gas or agriculture but in various sectors.
“All that is needed is for the current peace to be sustained, the investors will also keep coming and there will be employment opportunities, expanded skills acquisition programmes and wealth creation to really take Ahoada West to where it belongs,” he said.
Akuru expressed hope that the fall in the price of oil in the global market is a stage that will come to pass and pointed out that diversification calls for Nigerians to broaden their perception on the economy, by also thinking of untapped dormant potentials to reposition the economy.
