An environmentalist, Mr Desmond Majekodunmi, has stressed the need for all tiers of government, corporate organisations and individuals to protect the beaches by planting coconut on shorelines.
Majekodunmi made this call during interview with newsmen in Lagos.
According to him most of the nation’s beaches are fast disappearing due to ocean rise and coastline erosion as well as threatening ocean surge.
There is far less barrier to ocean surge on our beaches with massive collapse of coconut tree on the shorelines and this should be a big source of concern.     .
“1t’s good to sound this warning that there no cure tor ocean ‘surge ’ because of ocean rise.
‘What we need to do is to plant coconut trees along the beaches as we11 as ensure replacement of those eroded by strong waves.
The coconut trees will help cushion the effects of ocean rise and erosion of coastlines.”
Majekodunmi, who is also a board member of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) said ocean rise was the consequence of man’s activities which over carbonise the atmosphere.
He said that the over carboniscd atmosphere was the cause of global warming which had translated to the melting of huge icebergs in Antarctic regions, North Atlantic and other cold regions.
The icebergs are slowly melting and increasing the volume of water while the global warming makes the water     to expand”, he said.        The environmentalist said it was worrisomeas the combination of activities was causing the ocean to rise and     result in ocean surge.
