PDP Convention: Lawyers, Politicians Berate Police
Unpleasant reactions
have continued to trail the action of the Nigerian Police in barricading the entrances of the Sharks Football Stadium, venue of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention in Port Harcourt with some segments of the society expressing deep disappointment in Nigerian security agencies.
A lawyer, Barr. Ihere Solomon from Enugu State said the action of security men in sealing the venue of PDP Convention was entirely not in accordance with the law of the country.
According to him, police have no power under the law to execute the order of Abuja High Court, which he described as not being superior to the order of the same court of coordinate jurisdiction in Port Harcourt.
Solomon said, if there was any order to be obeyed, it was the first judgement delivered in Port Harcourt, since there was no any superior Court of Appeal order against the judgement.
He described the Police action as biased and unfair to a political party in a democratic nation like Nigeria.
In his reaction, the Chairman of PDP in Rivers State, Bro. Felix Obuah accused the police of being partisan by taking sides with Modu Sheriff’s position to scuttle the party’s National Convention in Port Harcourt.
Obuah also accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) – led Federal Government of conniving with Sheriff to precipitate more crisis in the party.
He said the barricading of the Convention venue by police was a direct order of the APC-led Federal Government. Obuah however said that the extension of the Makarfi-led National Working Committee was good for the growth of the party and democracy.
Also speaking, an aspirant for the office of 1st Deputy National Chairman of PDP, Barr. George A. Turnah from Bayelsa State, accused the APC of backing Alhaji Modu Sheriff’s faction to destroy PDP as a strong opposition party in the country.
According to him, APC was aware of PDP’s determination to take over power again in 2019, and that the party (APC) therefore decided to use the ongoing PDP crisis to destroy the party in its entirety.
Also condemning the action, a contestant for the position of National Secretary, Buhari Bala said he has earlier warned the party against the choice of Alhaji Modu Sheriff as Acting Chairman of the party, but the party stakeholders did not believe him.
He said, Alhaji Sheriff’s intention was to destroy the party and decamp to the APC, saying that Sheriff has no good intention for the party.
The Chairman of the PDP in Akuku Toru LGA, Mr. Rowland Sekibo also condemned the action of the police in sealing up the venue of the convention.
“The decision to extend the tenure of the Caretaker Committee was the best in the circumstance because if we had not done that, we would have further divided the party”, he noted.
In his reaction, the Special Adviser to the Rivers State Governor, Bar. Chris Itamunoala expressed confidence that PDP will overcome its present challenges.
He said the police was out to undermine the integrity of the party but got it wrong as the party had to relocate to the party’s secretariat.
