Inheritance: Women Group Hails Supreme Court Judgement
The President of
Anambra State Women Association in Lagos (ASWAL), Dr Nkiru Ifekwem, has commended the Supreme Court for upholding Igbo women’s right to inheritance.
Ifekwem said during a visit to the Anambra State House of Assembly Speaker, Mrs Rita Maduagwu, that the judgment which gave Igbo women the right to inherit part of their husband’s or father’s property was a great relief for them.
“The law has shown that every female child in the South-East geo-spolitical zone shall inherit or get a share of her father’s and/or husband’s property, even if the deceased had no male child,” she said.
Ifekwem said that she was overwhelmed with joy knowing that the law had been domesticated in Anambra State.
She urged the lawmakers in other South East states to take a cue from Anambra State and domesticate the law.
She commended the efforts of the Speaker, recalling that before going into politics, she was the association’s legal adviser.
The association president also extolled the state legislators for their serenity and maturity in their legislative business.
She said that members of the association, a socio-cultural organisation, comprising of women representatives from the 177 communities of the state based in Lagos, were home for the annual August meeting.
Ifekwem announced that the Speaker would be one of the guest lecturers at the association’s week-long programme in October.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Planning Committee for the October programme, Mrs Chinwe Nwune, described Anambra women as humble and exemplary personalities.
Nwune said the programme would feature fund raising for a vocational centre to help train and empower the girl-child in addition to inspiring young women for a better tomorrow.
Responding, Maduagwu thanked the women for recognising her position and honouring her as one of them.
