Group Wants Women Participation In Governance
A non governmental
organisation, Stakeholders Democratic Network (SDN) has called for more participation of women in governance and democratic process in Nigeria.
The Programme Manager of SDN, Choice Obasi made the call at the presentation of post election report of the 2015 general election.
Obasi said that there was need for more awareness to be carried out on the role of women in politics, so as to affect the percentage of women that will participate in the 2019 general elections.
“For me the issue of women participation in politics cannot be over emphasised. You can see the percentage of women in politics is dismal. Yes, we have women voters, but few women occupying political positions in the nation”, she said.
According to the programme manager, women are occupying less than 5 per cent of the various political positions, which ought not to be so, adding that they should rise and stand for their rights.
She further tasked citizens to always hold their leaders accountable as active participation of citizens in democratic process will ensure good governance in Nigeria.
According to her, 2019 is just 3 years ahead and not far, adding that, it is time to evaluate the performances of the political leaders.
She urged the citizens to always ask meaningful questions about the activities of the leaders they appointed, saying it would spur them into carrying out their various responsibilities.
Obasi assured the public that SDN will continue to monitor the democratic activities in the state, as well as give accurate report to the public.
