The Vice Chairman, Nigerian Red Cross Society, Prof. Peter Katchy, has appealed to Nigerians to provide material and financial support for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the country.

Katchy told newsmen in Enugu government alone could not totally provide all their needs.

He noted that effort of resettling IDPs and ensuring their health should be everybody’s responsibility.

According to him, Nigerians must cater for their brothers and sisters, who found themselves in the condition of being displaced from their homes.

“We need concerted and collective efforts to resettle our brothers and sisters in IDP camps in the North-East and Bakassi.

“The load is becoming uneasy for the Federal and state governments in the North-East region as well as the government of Cross River.

“But, without equivocation, I know that Nigerians especially the wealthy and philanthropists have the capacity and capability to assist the various governments so that they can resettle our brothers and sisters to their homes,’’ he said.

Katchy, who is also a disaster expert noted that the economy of the country would not recover with millions of people still depending on the government for their daily meal and other needs.

“They need to go back and start to depend on their former means of livelihood for the economy of the country to recover.
