FIDA Tasked On Woman, Child Protection

Wife of  the  Rivers State Governor, Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike, has called on women lawyers to partner  with  other women professional groups   to protect less privileged  women and children  in the country.
Speaking  as a Special Guest of Honour at the special session of the International Federation of Women Lawyers  (FIDA ) during the ongoing 56th NBA National Conference in Port Harcourt yesterday,  Justice Nyesom-Wike said such partnership  will afford women groups the needed capacity  to advance  women rights.
The wife of the Rivers State Governor who described  the theme of the session: “Enforcing Laws Protecting Women and Children : Issues and Challenges “, as apt also called for the creation  of  awareness  on existing  gender protection  laws, so that more women can take advantage of them.
She said : “I urge FIDA to do more for the less privileged  women of Nigeria. I suggest  that FIDA should work  with  other women professional  groups to ensure that women  rights are protected.
She regretted  that the responses to the violation of women by institutions have been disheartening, especially  when victims courageously report cases.
She also urged  men to join the struggle for gender equality  in the country.
In her remarks, Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Adama Iyayi-Lamikanra called for more robust implementation of gender laws for the protection of  women.
The Head of Service of Rivers State, Barrister Rufus Godwins in a paper presentation  advocated for stiffer penalties for sexual offenders.
Nana Oyelithur, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection,  Republic of Ghana , said  that it is necessary  for  the  rights of women to be respected in the society.
She said that Ghana has taken several strategic  measures  to advance the protection  of  the  rights of women and children.
Country Vice President /National President of FIDA, Mrs Inime Aguma assured that FIDA  will always stand for the rights of women irrespective of the challenges.
The session  was attended  by  women lawyers  from across  the  country.
