FG Faults Plan To Reduce Work Hours
The Federal Government has kicked against reducing the hours of work of workers by some state governments in the country.
The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Senator Chris Ngege who stated this in Abuja on Wednesday, said that the action of the state governments of Benue and Imo States was illegal and uncalled for.
Ngige directed the two state governors to reverse their decisions as the Federal Government is never in support of such illegal decisions.
The minister said that the directive is in pursuant to the powers vested in him by Section 5 (1) and (2) of the Trade Dispute Act, Laws of the Federation 2004.
He said that the issue of arbitrary reduction in the hours of work was against the ILO Convention I, which had been adopted and domesticated by Nigeria, adding that the law prescribed eight hours of work in a day and not more than 40 hours in a week.
He cautioned against such action to avoid unnecessary industrial disputes in the two states.
