Banigo Urges Stiffer Action Against Rapists, Others
The Rivers State
Deputy Governor, Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo, has called for stiffer action to be taken towards ending increased cases of child rape and forced labour.
In a statement through her Press Secretary, Paul Damgbor, to commemorate this year’s World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, Banigo said trafficking in persons was a crime against God and humanity, and exploits, especially women and children.
The deputy governor enjoined parents to be more vigilant on the activities of their children and wards, by advising them against associating with negative peer groups, noting that the rate at which children are initiated into cultism was worrisome.
Banigo further revealed that statistics have shown that over 2.5 million people are trapped in modern day slavery with the figure expected to be on the increase, if concerted efforts are not made to help check the ugly trend.
The deputy governor urged security agencies and other relevant organizations to step up the fight against trafficking in persons, describing it as dehumanizing and abominable.
