Wife of Enugu State Gov
ernor, Mrs Monica Ugwuanyi, has charged mothers to sustain exclusive breastfeeding to stem illness among infants.
Ugwuanyi gave the charge at the foundation-laying of a skill acquisition centre at Lejja community in Nsukka Local Government Area of the state.
She said that exclusive breastfeeding would also check mother and child mortality incidents in the country.
“From health perspective, there is no credible alternative to feeding babies with natural food nutrients, especially breast milk,’’ she said.
Ugwuanyi restated her commitment to programmes that would accelerate development at the grassroots to enable rural dwellers, especially women, to enjoy dividends of democracy.
She said that she was concerned about grassroots development because a greater number of women and youths in the rural areas were languishing in abject poverty.
On her U-TOLF pet project, the governor’s wife revealed plans to extend the programme to communities so as to impact more positively rural dwellers.
“I am calling on women to make proper use of their time during this year’s ‘August meeting’ so as to be able to achieve tangible development for their communities,’’ she stated.
In his remark, Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr Sam Ngwu, emphasised the need for exclusive breastfeeding, saying it catered for the health of the mother and child.
“We are urging women to take advantage of the free ante-natal and post-natal care programme in all government health facilities in the state,’’ Ngwu advised.
Highpoint of the ceremony was a free medical treatment sponsored by the governor’s wife, who also donated cash and baby items to families of Mr Dickson Nnamene and Mr Benedith Ocheme, whose wives gave birth to triplets.
