RVHA Passes PH Polytechnic Bill Into Law
The River State House
of Assembly, last Friday, passed the Port Harcourt Polytechnic Bill into law, thus making the former Rivers State College of Arts and Science, Rumuola now Port Harcourt Polytechnic.
The House, which was presided over by the Speaker, Adams Dima, also passed into law the Rivers State Taxes and Miscellaneous Bill, 2016, and Hotel Occupancy and Restaurant Consumption Bill, 2016.
The new laws now make it incumbent on all business operators in the state to pay taxes.
Those in the hospitality industry, the law insists, are to pay four per cent of things consumed in their hotels and restaurants.
Speaker of the House, Adams Dima, said that the lawmakers will always act in the interest of the state on all issues and at all times.
Before passage of the Rivers State Taxes and Miscellaneous Bill into law, members were divided with some saying it could affect growth of the private sector in the state.
The member representing Khana 1 Constituency, Deeya Barine, who spoke during the debate on the bill, said agricultural produce should be exempted from taxation.
