Rangers Back On Top After Win At Akwa
Rangers have regained
the leadership of the Nigeria league in style after they defeated hosts Akwa United 3-2 in Uyo on Saturday.
They now have 46 points from 26 matches, three points more than Wikki Tourists, who face a tricky road trip at Niger Tornadoes yesterday.
Last season, Akwa won this clash 2-0 after they held their opponents to a 2-2 draw in Enugu.
Rangers achieved the double over the Uyo club after they also won the reverse fixture 3-0.
Rangers took the lead after three minutes when goalkeeper Olufemi Kayode badly misjudged a back pass by defender Harrison Ibukun for an own goal.
After a laboured start, the home team then drew level on the stroke of 45 minutes when Fortune Omoniwari powered home a free header off a superb pullout by Ubong Friday.
The aerial prowess of Omoniwari will trouble the Rangers defence several other times in this encounter.
Rangers created the better chances early in the first half with Godwin Aguda fluffing a chance from inside the box, before Cyril Olisema failed to make hay for Akwa United later in the half as the home team fought back for an equaliser.
On the hour, Chisom Egbuchulam netted his 11th goal of the campaign when he slotted home from inside the box from an Edo Ocheme delivery.
Rangers made it 3-1 in the 73rd minute after great team play involving Obinna Nwobodo, Aguda and substitute Moris Chebem, who fired past goalkeeper Kayode with a low shot.
In stoppage time, Omoniwari got his brace beyond the outstanding Ghanaian goalkeeper Nana Bonsu.
