Orashi Region Set To Host Football Tourney
In conformity to the new
Rivers state vision in the aspect of sports and sustainable development in the state, sports enthusiast Prince Uche Umejuru has expressed commitment to host grassroots football competition in Orashi kingdom, in Rivers State.
He stated that the tournament is to bring back the peace, unity and love among youths in the area, most significantly to discover talents that will be ambassadors for the state and Nigeria at large.
Prince Umejuru who has sponsored several football tournaments made this known in an exclusive interview with Tide sports, yesterday, in Port Harcourt, saying that the lack of facilities and grassroots sports competitions is the bane of sports development in Nigeria.
“ It is apparent that most of the local government areas are characterised by cult related activities, this I believe is caused by idleness, because if the youths are engaged meaningfully they may not have time to indulge in such activities” Prince Umejuru said.
According to him, the tournament is geared towards discovering talents that can play in our national teams in any category
“ My vision of the competition is to discover hidden talented players and to ensure that at least five Rivers indigenes are featured in our national teams at any category.
Is no doubt that most players in rural areas play better than those playing in some of these big clubs in Nigeria so my desire is to give them the opportunity to express themselves “ He stated.
The sports enthusiast used the forum to praise the governor of the state Barrister Nyesom Wike over his pragmatic approach in the development of the state most especially in sports development.
“ The immediate payment of eight months salary arrears owed players of State owned football teams by the previous administration and hosting of international matches within the period are clear testimony that the governor loves sports,” Prince Umejuru added.
