NPFL: Enyimba Closes In On Front Runners
With Enyimba only
back on the CAF Champions League trail in August, the Nigeria champions look good to put more pressure on the other title chasers in the league.
On the back of a 2-0 home win over El Kanemi on Sunday, Enyimba are now fourth on the table with 37 points and with two games at hand.
They will most certainly fancy their chances of a win against second from bottom Heartland in an ‘Oriental Derby’ even though it will be away at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri.
They are only five points adrift of league leaders Wikki Tourists, who dropped two points at home to closest rivals Enugu Rangers.
Wikki’s title credentials will be further tested on Sunday when they are guests of last season’s runners-up Warri Wolves, who are now hovering around the relegation zone their term.
Rangers will be home to an Abia Warriors side, who will still licking their wounds after they were upset by relegation-haunted Plateau United right in front of their fans and who will be missing star Chisom Chikatara off this week to start his career overseas.
Rivers United are also hanging in there in third place despite a lone goal loss at Nasarawa United on Saturday.
A home win against Niger Tornadoes next weekend will further improve their chances of clinching the championship.
Four-time champions Kano Pillars remain in contention, but must beat visiting Lobi Stars to stay on track.
At the other end of the table, bottom team Ikorodu United look doomed for a prompt return to the lower league, while Plateau United and Shooting Stars will hope to make the most of home advantage when they welcome Akwa United and Nasarawa United, respectively.
