NIOB Seeks Integration Into Building Plan Approval Process
The Nigerian Institute of
Building (NIOB), Rivers State Chapter, has demanded to be integrated into the building plan approval process of the state.
The chairman of NIOB, Rivers State, Mr Moses Ugheoke, who made the demand in a chat with The Tide also said registered builders should be used as consultants in all building development projects by the state.
According to him, “I would also want that registered builders should be engaged in building policy formulations and project inspection”.
Ugheoke noted that it was not enough to give building approval, also, it is important to ensure that such buildings are built according to specifications.
He stated, it this is done, it will not only reduce building collapse,” but would ensure that professionals were placed in the right jobs.
He commended the state government in its efforts at restoring Port Harcourt City to its former status of Garden City.
He called for the implementation of the safety document prepared by the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) and adopted by the Council of Housing (COH), stressing that it should be used by the state government for all Building Development Projects.
He also appealed that the state government establish and create 9 building control department in the state ministry of urban development and physical planning to carry out oversight function of the ministry.
