Imo Polls Not Stalled By Violence – CP
The Commissioner of
Police in Imo State, Mr Taiwo Lakanu, has dismissed the view that the July 23 Imo North Senatorial election was declared inconclusive because of violence.
The commissioner expressed the view in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Andrew Enwere, in Owerri yesterday.
“The attention of the Imo Police Command has been drawn to the unfounded rumours on the reason for the declaration of the Imo North senatorial election inconclusive.
“The general public should take note that there was high presence of police both in Imo and outside the state to monitor and maintain peace during the election,“ he said.
Lakanu said that there were only minor skirmishes by overzealous party supporters in some areas during the election.
The commissioner said that no life was lost during the election and urged the public to disregard the rumour.
Lakanu warned that any attempt by supporters of aggrieved candidates to engage in acts capable of disrupting the hard earned peace and security of the state would be resisted by the state police command.
He further advised that aggrieved candidates should channel their grievances to the appropriate authorities and not to incite their supporters to destabilise the peace of the state.
He said that the Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of Police in- charge of Force Operation Department, Mr Joshak Habila, and his team from force headquarters were also on ground to supervise the election.
Lakanu said he patrolled round the six local government areas in the senatorial district with the DIG and his team to ensure smooth conduct of the election.
