Imo Govt Explains Market Relocation
The Deputy Chief of
Staff (operations), Imo State Government House, Owerri, Mr Kingsley Uju, says the planned relocation of Ekeukwu Owerri Market situated at the popular Douglas Road by Governor Rochas Okorocha, is the best option for Imo people, noting that such action will ease human and vehicular movement along the ever busy road.
He therefore, urged the affected traders to comply with the directive of the government for their own benefits, asserting that Owelle did not mean to hurt Imo people in his administration. The Deputy Chief of Staff who was speaking with journalists at the Imo State International Conference Centre, Owerri, the venue of the meeting between the governor, Imo traders and artisans, listed numerous benefits derivable from the relocation exercise.
He added that the relocation of the market to Egbeada in Owerri West L.G.A and the Imo artisans to their government approved site would be akin to the governor’s ingenuity of “Imo my pride propect”, stressing that the government’s idea of putting artisans in a particular area would attract the building of Artisans’ Institution that would facilitate the acquisition of skills by them.
It would be recalled that the government of Owelle Rocahs Okorocha has been having some squabbles with the people of Owerri Nchi-ise (Owerri Municipal) over the proposed relocation of the oldest Ekeukwu-Owerri Market to another local government which invariably has given rise to series of protests by their women, men and the youths against the move.
