Scrabble Federation Decries Lack Of Govt Funding
The President of Nigeria
Scrabble Federation (NSC), Suleiman Gora, has said that the federation has not received any form of funding from the Federal Government in eight years.
Gora told newsmen in Abuja last week that the federation was only surviving with contributions from individual members.
“We only get moral support from government in terms of them saying, ‘yes we are with you,’ but the issue is that it takes resources to plan and execute programmes.
“In the last eight years, we have not got a kobo from the Ministry of Youth and Sports even for the secretariat.
“The secretariat is the responsibility of the government that is why it is clearly stated in the law of the National Sports Commission that they shall be responsible for the office of the secretary,’’ he said.
Gora said the federation had asked clubs to pay their registration fees to enable it to raise funds to participate in the Mindsports International Scrabble Championship.
The championship is due to take place in France between August 27 and August 29.
Gora said the federation was sustaining its activities because of the joy it derived from the game.
“We do it because we take joy in the fact that we have a lot of young men that we assist.
“These young men have come to find solace in this game rather than get involved in so many things that are unwholesome,’’ he said.
Gora said that scrabble has removed the youth from bad behaviour and helped to develop their intellect, adding that in spite of all challenges, the boys had remained steadfast.
