RSG Recommits To Shorelines Protection
The Rivers State Government has re-stated its commitment to protect vulnerable shorelines in the state.
The State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, who said this at the 2016 World Environment Day celebration in Port Harcourt, also restated the determination of the administration to protect the environment for the present and future generations of the state.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo, said that government was committed to implementing all relevant environmental laws in the state.
He also said that government will partner both Civil Society groups and communities to encourage tree planting while the use of firewood for cooking will be discouraged.
The governor also assured of continuous partnership with the Federal Government to facilitate the implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report on the Clean-up of Ogoniland.
Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Environment, Professor Roseline Konya, said that the celebration was being organised across the world to give human face to environmental issues as well as empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development.
She said that in line with the theme of the celebration: “Fight against illegal wildlife Trade”, the Ministry will partner with civil society organizations to evolve a conservation programme in the state.
