Monarch Charges Residents On Sanitation

A monarch in Imo
State, Eze Joe Oleka,has called on residents in the state to show greater commitment during monthly sanitations.
Oleka, who is the traditional ruler of Oru-Ahiara community in Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area, spoke during June sanitation on Saturday
He decried the low level of participation among his subjects, adding that they left their homes for Afor Oru Market Square as early as 5 a.m.
The community who leader also expressed regrets that youths used the exercise to play football stressed that playing football when the roads to most towns and villages were bushy was not the best way to ensure healthy environment.
Also, a youth leader in Izombe in Oguta Local Government Area, Mr Ozor Okorie, applauded the state government for the monthly exercise.
Okorie urged the people to take advantage of the exercise to clean-up their communities during the three hours sanitation.
According to him, Gov. Rochas Okorocha cannot be everywhere to clean-up the state.
“This is one policy that is in the best interest of our people because a cleanlier environment reduces the incidence of people fallen sick’ he said.
Okorie called on communities across the state to come up with reward mechanism for the cleanest villages.
He said that “if this measure is adopted it will help to awaken the consciousness of most communities to participate in the clean-up’’.
Our correspondent reports that traders at various markets within Owerri urban and other areas participated in the clean-up..
Heaps of refuse were seen at Tetlow Street, Douglas, School Road and New Market among others areas after the exercise.
A bread seller at Rotibi by Douglas, Mrs Ngozi Nwadike, appealed to officials of Imo State Environmental Sanitation Agency to ensure quick evacuation of the refuse.
“The challenge we usually have after sanitation is the long hours it takes the sanitation authorities to evacuate the heaps of refuse dumped by residents and such have obvious negative implication,” she said.
