Following growing out
cry by air travellers in Nigeria against the high cost of using some facilities at the nation’s various airports, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), has assured that adequate measures would be put in place to address charges and post concession agreements.
Making this known while speaking to journalists on the matter, the General Manager, Corporate Affairs of FAAN, Mr. Yakubu Dati said the authority had aligned with the position of the minister of state for aviation on the issue of various charges at the nation’s airports.
Dati explained that the minister had assured that payment for the use of trolleys at the nation’s airports would stop as soon as the current concession contract agreement expires.
“Just like the minister disclosed, some travellers petitioned the ministry over the issue, insisting that the cost of usage of trolleys is covered by certain taxes and charges paid by passengers.
“We have agreed that as soon as this contract on concessioning ends, we shall return to the old system, as the agreement could not be stopped immediately, as it would lead to litigations”, Dati explained.
According to him, FAAN understands the agony of air travellers who have described payment for using facilities like trolleys as clear exploitation.
He said “At the moment, we cannot help the situation because the services are offered by concessionaires. It is at the end of the concession that FAAN can intervene”.
The corporate affairs manager further opined that travellers had wondered why users of such items like trolleys still attract payment, as they insist that such had been built into air ticket.
