ACL: Enyimba, Sundowns Set For Titanic Clash
Enyimba and Mamelodi Sundowns are set for what promises to be a titanic 2016 CAF Champions League tussle in Atteridgeville today.
The Brazilians will feel aggrieved having been stripped of the victory they achieved in Algeria earlier this month.
Goals from Tiyani Mabunda and Khama Billiat steered the ABSA Premiership champions to a memorable 2-0 win. But, Pitso Mosimane’s troops were denied all three points after CAF disqualified ES Setif from this year’s tournament.
The former two-time CAF Champions League champions were booted out of the competition following their fans’ unruly behaviour during the loss to the Brazilians.
But, despite having zero points on the board and having to start from scratch, Sundowns know victory in both their Group B home games will more likely than not secure their passage to the knockout stages.
Billiat, who scored a wonder goal in Setif, predicts another tough battle against Enyimba.
“I think it is a tough game…playing at home, there is a lot of pressure…we need a result and we have to bring our A game,” said Billiat.
“We need to stay focused, make sure we do the job on the day.
“There is always pressure, it is good to play with pressure…it gives you something to play for. You don’t have time to relax, you want results.”
Teammate Keagan Dolly explained that the club is disappointed at being back on zero points, but is confident they will win on home soil.
“We are a bit disappointed that they deducted our points, we fought really hard in Algeria, we played well, we were defensively disciplined, we created chances and we scored the two goals,” Dolly added.
“Our next focus is the game against Enyimba. We are playing at home, in front of our supporters…we have to stick to what we are good at and just go for all three points.”
Meanwhile, CAF Champions League leading scorer Mfon Udoh has said he hopes Enyimba clinch all points in the Group B clash.
Udoh’s seven goals have ensured Enyimba’s qualification for the money-spinning stage of the Champions League.
And the Nigeria champions now need to win at Sundowns this evening to get their campaign back on track after they lost their opening match to Zamalek at home.
“Against Zamalek, we did everything but just could not get the ball into the net. We will go all out against Sundowns and expect to pick three points,” said Mfon Udoh.
Enyimba chairman Felix Anyansi-Agwu was equally bullish that they can win on the road in Pretoria.
“We lost the first match of the group stage at home, but we have put that behind us and we have great motivation going into this match,” Anyansi said.
“The boys know that nothing less than an outright win will do and they will go all out for it.
“We have tremendous experience at this level and we will approach the game with confidence in our ability to take the maximum three points.”
The match begins at 7pm South African time (6pm Nigerian time).
