Alert security operatives, yesterday, foiled a desperate attempt by daring gunmen to attack Port Harcourt Prisons in the heart of the Rivers State capital.
The Tide gathered that the attack was ostensibly meant to free inmates.
The number of casualties is yet unknown.
The Tide learnt that heavy gunfire was heard around the prisons in the early hours of yesterday, triggering panic and pandemonium as residents around the areas scampered for their safety.
Reliable sources told The Tide that the gunmen had launched the attack on the prisons from Bundu Waterside in the Town axis of Port Harcourt.
The federal prison is located between Bundu Waterfront, Aggrey and Creek roads in the Old Port Harcourt Township.
But prisons authorities later told newsmen that the report of attempted jail break was false.
The prisons controller said that the gunmen had shut sporadically around the Abuja Street axis near the prison perimetre, apparently on their way to an operation somewhere at Bundu Waterfront.
However, as at the time of filing this report, the security around the prisons perimetre has been tightened.
