Marine Transporters Decry Ban On 200HP Engine

Reactions have started
to trail the recent ban of 200 horse power out-board engines by the Nigeria Navy.
Some speed boat operators who reacted to the ban in an interview with The Tide correspondent in Port Harcourt Wednesday said the ban is unnecessary and un-called for.
According to them, the ban is not a rightful solution to fight sea piracy in the country.
They opined that one of the solutions is to provide gun boats on patrol at the flash points.
The operators said the Navy should restrategise their operations in curbing the menace of the criminals on the sea.
Ubani Diri was of the view that Navy should put in place measures that would facilitate their operation to checkmate piracy and smuggling in the nation’s coastal waters.
According to him, the ban on the use of 200 horse-power out-board engine by commercial speed boat operators will have a negative effect on the livelihood of many citizens, because it is faster to use such engines to travel to interior coastal communities in the state.
Another boat operator, Ibinabo Granville noted that the ban is uncalled for, as most of the commercial speed boat drivers do not involve in sea piracy.
Granville however accused the Navy of some times conniving with sea pirates and smugglers in their operations, stressing that the Navy personnel should rethink their decision and stop harassing operators with 200 horse power engines.
Another speedboat operator, Osaki Alalibo condemned the ban and said it is aimed at witch-hunting some boat operators plying some riverine communities, and called on them to jettison the idea.
In his opinion, Timi Ologeripa noted that the ban is uncalled for as all speedboat drivers with 200 horse power outboard engines are not sea pirates or robbers on sea, pointing out that the Navy should abolish such idea in the interest of the people.
It would be recalled that the Nigerian Navy recently placed a ban on the use of 200 horse power out-board engines as part of measures to checkmate sea piracy, sea robbery and other crimes in the nation’s coastal waters.
It was alleged that some people of questionable character breach security in the waterways using this class of high powered engines to perpetrate all manner of crimes in Nigerian territorial waters.
