Lawyer Wants Parents Prosecuted Over Child Rights Law
Cultist and amunition paraded at the Rivers State Police Command, during a press briefing, in Port Harcourt, recently.
A Port Harcourt
based lawyer, Barr. J.P. Ebenezar, has called on law enforcement agents to prosecute parents who violate the child Rights Law of the state.
Barr. Ebenezar, who stated this while speaking with journalists in Port Harcourt, at the weekend, noted that the prosecution of violators would take children of school going age out of the streets during schools hours.
He said that it had become worrisome that children of school age hawked wares while their mates were in the classrooms.
He said that since the child rights law was enacted in Rivers State it had been business as usual.
Barr. Ebenezar noted that the reason for the enactment of the child rights law would be defeated if offenders were never prosecuted.
He stated that the only way to ensure compliance by parents was to prosecute offenders.
According to him, “the problem with our society is the implementation of our laws.
“We make preponderance of laws but the problem lies with implementation. It is annoying that parents children and wards hawk goods during school hours in spite of the child rights law,” he said.
“The right to education is very beneficial to the children. No child can afford to be illiterate in the 21st century. Besides, there is free education at all levels in the state”, the lawyer stated.
He called on all and sundry to make our child rights law work.
