‘Establish Quantity Surveyors Directorate In MDAs’

A quantity surveyor
(QS), practising in Rivers State and member of the Nigeria Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), Mr Philemon George, has called for the establishment of QS Directorates in government organisations such as Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
George who made the call while speaking to journalists in his office in Port Harcourt, also said this would encourage effectiveness and cost management in these government organs.
He reasoned that as cost managers, quantity surveyors, manning     these aspects for government would ensure that costs were appropriately valued.
He explained that government had continuously lost money on account of mismanagement of funds, due to non professional handling of the cost and expenditure on projects.
According to him, “government spends money on projects that were never destined to be completed because of improper costing and evaluation and so every year government would earmark money for that particular projects.
“Most times such money goes into the pockets of one lame contractor who has claimed he could do the job, but could not do it or do it half way,” he said.
He said “it is high time professionals were used to execute jobs in their primary professions so as to derive maximum value for their projects.
He further said, “let the professional QS   handle cost evaluation, expenditure management and rendering of expenditure to enhance the building project.
