Prof. Maduike Ezeibe of the
Department of Veterinary Medicine, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike near Umuahia, has urged the Federal Government to set up an agency to harness research results.
Ezeibe made the plea in an interview with newsmen in Aba, recently.
He said that unless Nigeria took seriously the issue of harnessing research outcomes from its indigenous researchers, the country would not progress scientifically.
“Nigeria does not harness research results from researchers. We do not even believe our inventions because we have no confidence in our ability.
“This is not going to help our progress.
“We need to change this system of thinking in order to develop our science and technology. Nigeria needs to start commercialising its research outcomes.
“To commercialise inventions, governments should set up an agency to study research results so that good ones can be sponsored through Bank of Industry loans for commercialisation,’’ Ezeibe said..
He said that setting up an agency to study and recommend how research works could be expanded and commercialised, could help solve the nation’s problem of seeking solutions to its problems abroad.
According to him, a Nigerian has perfected an Anti-Retroviral Therapy that works.
He urged the Federal Government to verify researchers’ claims and assist to develop the research base.
