Counsel Lauds CJ Over Gaol Delivery
A Port Harcourt-based
lawyer, Barr Chijioke Agi, has lauded the Rivers State Chief Judge, Justice A.I. Iyaye Lamikanra for the recent jail delivery, describing the gesture as timely.
Barr. Agi, who made the commendation while speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt, on Monday expressed regrets that some accused persons in custody had been there for more than five years without trial.
According to him, “accused persons are presumed innocent until the contrary is proved by a court of law. Unfortunately, what we find today is that an accused person is made to pass through an ugly situation. In fact, justice delayed is justice denied.”
He said the Port Harcourt Maximum Security Prison was full and inmates were suffering congestion.
Barr. Agi noted that jail delivery should be regular so that inmates suffering without trial could be granted bail or discharged.
He said young persons, who should be within the working population were languishing in jail across the nation of high productivity to crime.
He cautioned the 54 persons who were released from jail to seek better means of earning a living instead of recourse to crime.
Barr. Agi opined that God had given man the power to overcome the challenges that he encountered but noted that overcoming one’s challenges must be done with the right frame of mind and within the ambits of the law.
The Port Harcourt lawyer encouraged released persons to seek useful vocations and acquire skills that would stand the test of time.
