Clubs Threaten To Boycott League Over ‘Illegalities’

Majority of Nationwide League One clubs have threatened to boycott the new season should “a kangaroo election” go ahead at today’s congress and they are not allowed to manage their league, which is purely run with their own financial contributions.
One of the club officials told AfricanFootball.com: “No one told us that today’s congress will be an elective one. It was only when we arrived Abuja that we got to know.
“This is illegal and does not augur well for the growth of the basement league and Nigerian football in general.
“Many of us have resolved that if all these illegalities are smuggled through today, we will be prepared to boycott this season to press home our points.”
The clubs have also complained about the “controlled” representation at the congress.
The clubs in the FCT for instance have unanimously rejected the person designated to represent them at the congress today.
Various FA chairmen have also been drafted to force clubs to agree on their representatives.
“The premier league has a sponsor which cushions some of the costs incurred by the clubs like match official indemnities, but that is not the case with the Nationwide League, where the clubs bear all the costs,” argued a club chairman.
“We therefore have to be allowed to run our league and not for some outsiders selected by the NFF to do so on our behalf.”
The Nationwide congress will begin at 6pm today in Abuja.
