Zesco United head
coach George Lwandamina believes that the club’s success in reaching the group stages of the 2016 CAF Champions League is proof that the game is on the rise in Zambia.
Lwandamina, who doubles up as the head coach of Chipolopolo, guided the reigning league champions into the group stages with a 5-2 aggregate win over Stade Malien.
“It is a sign of improvement not only for Zesco but also for Zambian football because in the past we have struggled to reach this far in the competition,” Lwandamina told Tidesports source.
“The group stage will provide our players with an opportunity to showcase their talent and I hope they will be able to go further, which will be good for them.”
Zesco subsequently ended the countries seven year hiatus in the group stages of the CAFCL. The Ndola-based side were the last side from Zambia to qualify for the tournament stage of the competition back in 2009.
The draw for the group stage will be conducted in Cairo on May 24.
