Rivers PDP Sues Amaechi For Contempt
The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has instituted contempt proceedings before a Port Harcourt High Court against the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, the Chief of Army staff, the Chief of Defence Staff and the Army Brigade Commander in Rivers State, Brigadier General Stevenson Olabanji, for allegedly deploying soldiers to Rivers State during the March 19 rerun elections in the state.
Counsel to the PDP, Kingsley Chuku, confirmed this to newsmen shortly after filing the contempt proceedings yesterday before Justice George Omereji of the Port Harcourt High court.
He said the deployment of soldiers during the rerun election in Rivers State was done in disregard and disobedience to a subsisting order of the court restraining the action.
The counsel to the PDP said, the committal proceedings seek to commit former governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, the Chief of Army staff, the Chief of Defence Staff and the Brigade Commander of Bori-Camp, Brigadier General Stevenson Olabanji, to prison for disobeying court order.
Our correspondent who covered the proceedings, reports that the court has fixed April 14, 2016, to commence hearing of the committal proceedings by the Peoples’ Democratic Party in Rivers State.
