The Manager, Public Re
lations of the Nigeria Postal Service Port Harcourt Territorial Headquarters Mr Godwin Akpan has called for the appointment of a substantive post-master General following the sack of the acting Post-Master General, Mr Enoch Ogun, Tuesday by the Federal Government.
The Port Harcourt Nipost Staff, in an interview with the Tide in Port Harcourt Wednesday said the appointment of another acting Post Master General would not help issues.
Akpan said since the challenges are internal, that it will only take an experienced PMG to correct the situation.
According to him, NIPOST was too large to be handled on acting capacity by anyone.
He was of the view that those appointed on acting capacity may not be willing to put their best in the service due to the fear of the unknown.
The Tide gathered that there has been a misunderstanding between the Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu and NIPOST over the collection of stamp duty.
Another issue that led to Ogun’s sack as The Tide learnt, was an arguent over the appointment of agents for the collection of stamp duties in several sectors of the economy.
The Tide also gathered that NIPOST sometime last week interviewed upto 30 new companies and individuals who applied to serve as NIPOST stamp agents.
Such development, according to our source, irked the minister, who said NIPOST lacked the legal capacity to appoint any new agent for the collection of stamp duties.
A source from the office of the minister who pleaded anonymity, hinted that until the grey areas were cleared, and a substantive PMG appointed, no new stamp collection agents may be appointed.
It was further revealed that before this dispensation, few corporate organisations were claiming to have agreement with NIPOST regarding collection of stamp duties.
Meanwhile, the Port Harcourt NIPOST staff, has called on the federal government to use the post as its minting / printing source in order to move the system forward.
