The negotiations be
tween the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the management of Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IE) have broken down.
Speaking to newsmen in Lagos on Wednesday, the Ikeja Electricity Company Head of Corporate Communications, Felix Ofulue said that the company’s Management had to discontinue the negotiation due to a clear determination by the Labour representatives to stick to a pre-conceived and irreversible position that the process was flawed.
Ofulue said that the company’s management has seen the review process during the negotiation as an exercise in futility that served no useful purposes to both parties.
He said that the Labour leaders, rather than engage in an objective and constructive review of the whole appraisal which is tailored in line with global best practices, the labour leaders, had preferred an arbitrary review in which reduced criteria would be applied to certain selected employee members of the union.
The company said that the negotiation was tending towards a proposition that would jeopardise transparency, employee performance and service excellence to customers.
However, the labour has accused the company of not following due process and honesty in the negotiation process.
In a statement in Lagos on Wednesday by the NUEE Secretary General, Comrade Joe Ajacro, accused the management of Ikeja electricity company of not exhibiting sincerity, honesty and commitment to the negotiation process between the company and the labour union.
Ajacro said that the company was not following the terms of agreement reached between the company’s management and the industrial union to review the performance appraisal and competency assessment process.
However, it would be recalled that labour had picketed the Ikeja Electricity Distribution company for three days over the disengagement of workers who the company considered to have failed to meet the company’s performance objectives and criteria.
The picketing was suspended and agreement reached by both parties for negotiation.
