Mrs Obiano Opens Two Toilets In Rural Markets
The wife of Anambra Gov
ernor, Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano, has inaugurated modern toilets built by her pet project, the Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFE), in two markets.
Mrs Obiano said at the ceremony at Nteje, Anambra, that the gesture was aimed at supporting the government’s programme on environmental hygiene and cleanliness.
The structures were built under the auspices of CAFÉ at the Eke- Nteje Market in Oyi Local Government and Afor Mbaukwu in Awka South Local Government Area of the state.
She said that more of such facilities would be constructed in selected rural markets across the three senatorial districts of the state to boost environmental hygiene in rural markets.
Obiano said that the toilet project was targeted at improving the welfare of the women-folk through personal hygiene, environmental cleanliness and preservation of the dignity of women.
“The concept of the market toilet is borne out of a genuine desire to promote healthy market environment and cleanliness in our rural markets and the well-being of our industrious mothers.
“I observed the lack of basic conveniences in the rural markets and decided to encourage them by preserving their self-esteem.
“The toilets are complementary to the good work of the government in the area of maintenance of clean environment and it is funded by donors,’’ she said.
The governor’s wife said that apart from promoting hygiene, the toilets, which have male and female sections, would also empower women as their leaders were expected to manage the facilities.
She urged the people to treat the toilets as their own and ensure that they were kept clean always.
In their separate welcome addresses, the Chairmen of Oyi Local Government Council, Mr Maxi Oraefo, and his counterpart in Awka South Local Government, Mr Azubika Ilo, commended the governor’s wife for enthroning improved living condition in the communities.
They also charged the women to make good use of the facilities while also urging them to support the Willie Obiano-led administration.
