Man, 23, Arraigned For Allegedly Belonging To Unlawful Society

A 23-year-old man,
Henry Abu, was yesterday arraigned at an Evbouriaria Magistrates’ Court, Benin City, Edo, for allegedly belonging to an unlawful society called, “Eiye Confraternity’’.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Olatoye Oluwaseun, told the court that the accused, with other now at large, committed the offence on April 12, 2016, at Aiguokhian Street, 1st East Circular Road, Benin.
Oluwaseun said that the accused also permitted his residence, located at 10, Ogbelaka Street, Benin, to be used for initiation of new members to the illegal society.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the four-count charge.
He said that the offence contravened Section 516 (A), 62 (E) of the Criminal Code Cap 48 Vol. 11 Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976 now applicable in Edo.
The Magistrate, Mrs Caroline Nwoha, granted bail to the accused in sum of N100,000 and a surety in like sum, but said that surety must be gainfully employed in a recognised establishment.
Nwoha adjourned the case till May 10 for hearing.
