Four Nigerian Female Wrestlers Qualify For Olympics
The Nigeria Wrestling
Federation (NWF) on Saturday announced the qualification of four female wrestlers for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The female wrestlers are Blessing Oborududu (63kg), Mercy Genesis (48kg), Aminat Adeniyi (58kg) and Hannah Reuben (69kg), Tidesports source reports.
“They have all qualified for the finals of the ongoing Africa Oceania Olympic qualifiers in Algiers and have automatically qualified for the Olympics,’’ Daniel Igali, the NWF President told Tidesports.
That the four female wrestlers are to be joined by Odunayo Adekuoroye, who had earlier qualified by winning a bronze medal in the 53kg category at the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas.
Igali said that he was delighted with the development and was hopeful that the men would also replicate the feat.
He said that morale was high among the wrestlers and expectations were high that they would do well in their fights and make the country proud.
“They are all trying their best and I am optimistic it will end well and their male counterparts too will get some slots just like the females.
“I am so happy that I made the trip and have watched closely as they wrestled. They have been performing well but we still have a long way to go,’’ the federation’s president said.
