Former Ebonyi Deputy
Governor, Prof. Chigozie Ogbu, has hailed the State Government’s plan to propose a bill to the House of Assembly for the catering of people above 80 years.
Our correspondent reports that Gov. Dave Umahi recently announced that the bill would be sent to the House in memory of his late 84-year-old mother, Mrs Margareth Umahi.
Ogbu, a medical doctor, said that the move was commendable as people who fall within that age bracket mostly need assistance in the society.
“This issue brings me to the study of neo-notology which is the study of the last trimester of pregnancy and first 28 days of life.
“I spent two years in the United States of America studying that specialty and can inform you authoritatively that the family of former President John Kennedy initiated the study after losing a baby prematurely.
“This was intended to help other families who faced similar problems as Umahi should be commended for making provision for the catering of people in this later stage of life,” he said.
The former deputy governor, who heads the State Committee on Higher Education, noted that it was working assiduously to improve the lots of the state owned university and college of education.
“The institutions require the training of adequate manpower to generally reposition education in the state as the governor has paid great emphasis on the sector.
“The committee was given a three-month period to tackle all problems such as cultism, maladministration and ‘money for marks’ exchange, among other problems bedevilling these institutions.
“We are still gathering relevant data with adequate cooperation of these institutions, as we are expecting the final memoranda by next week,” he said.
He attributed the present peaceful disposition in the state to the adherence to the charter of equity which provided that all senatorial zones of the state should produce governors in turns.
“The former state governor wanted to truncate this arrangement but the stakeholders rejected the plans and ensured that the southern zone where I incidentally come from produced the governor.
“We received the required support and understanding from stakeholders from the North and Central senatorial zones which resulted in the peace being enjoyed presently in the state.
“The governor’s giant strides in infrastructure and other spheres of human development vindicates our promise to the electorate during the campaigns, that he is someone to be trusted,” he said.
