Disability Games Will Strengthen Para-Athletes – President
The President,
Nigeria Paralympics Committee, Monday Emoghavwe, said the National Disability Games being planned by the Lagos State government would help strengthen the para-athletes.
The Tidesports reports that the Lagos State Sports Council (LSSC) held a three-day stakeholders meeting in March to workout modalities for the proposed games.
Emoghavwe said that the games which would be the first of its kind, would give para-athletes a sense of belonging in the nation’s sporting realm.
“If Lagos State will organise disability games, that will help strengthen the athletes and also build-up the confidence the athletes need.
“We can also use it to evaluate the present performances of the athletes, the athletes’ needs to be checked regularly.’’
He urged other states to emulate LSSC initiative in encouraging para-athletes in the country.
That sports considered for the games are para-powerlifting, wheelchair basketball, para-table tennis, deaf sports, para-soccer and Special Olympics.
