Cricket: Nigeria Begins Training Ahead Of World Championship
Head Coach of the
national cricket male team, Uthe Ogbimi, says the team has begun intense training ahead of the Cricket World League Five championship in Jersey Island.
Ogbimi told newsmen in Abuja that 14 players had been selected by the team’s technical crew to participate in the event from May 21 to May 28, 2016.
Tidesports recalls that the team held three series of camping where over 40 players were invited to test their abilities and select the best for the championship.
He said the training would henceforth focus more on the specifics of games.
“Henceforth we are going more into specifics now.
“In the course of the trails, we know that some of the players may not have performed to their own best ability even though they still played well.
“But there is a level we want them to be performing at, to excel at that international competition.
“So, we are going to push them harder now for batting, for bowling, make them know that the margin for error now at this level is really slim.
“So, we have got to ensure that we push them harder and be more specific in terms of specialization that is why it is going to be more intensive.
“And we are down to the very best now, the standards are higher now, so the processes will be more intense.’’
Ogbimi also noted that the team was making plans for a training tour in United Kingdom which is also subject to the availability of funds.
However, the players selected to represent the country are Adekunle Adegbola, Emmanuel Okwudili, Joshua Ogunlola, Joshua Ayannaike, Oyede Adeleke, Jide Bejide, Azeez Salako, Chima Akachukwu, and Chimezie Onwuzilike.
Others are Abiodun Abioye, Segun Olayinka, Oluwasesan Adedeji, Ademola Onikoyi and Oluseye Olympio.
Nigeria, Oman, Tanzania, Vanuatu, Guernsey alongside hosts Jersey are expected to feature at the event.
