Council Seeks Training, Empowerment Of Artisans
A call has been made for
the training of artisan in Rivers State to position them as a formidable work force in the building industry.
The Coordinator, Counsil for Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON), Rivers State chapter, Mr Ephraim Ufot made this call in a chat with journalists at a construction site at Choba/NTA Road, Port Harcourt
Ufot stated that the council has developed a standard for construction tradesmen to develop well trained men for the building industry.
He stated that the call became necessary, following the influx of artisans from neighouring African countries into the country to do jobs Nigerians should otherwise be doing if they were well trained.
According to him, “we need well trained qualified manpower for the construction industry in the state, this would reduce the influx of workers from neighboring countries and even states to take jobs our boys should be doing, it would also reduce the unemployment rate and increase the productivity of the work force”.
He further said training would “develop independent labour trade contractors as self employed businessmen in the building industry. The importance of skills development training cannot be overemphasized, we therefore need to pay attention to the training of artisans”.
Additionally, he said government needs to interface with stakeholders in the sector to develop a strategic framework that would ensure that the well being of artisans was addressed, saying that they were usually subjected to poor working conductions, while charging artisans to be diligent in the discharge of their duties.
