Complementing Education With Skills
Education is the wealth
of knowledge acquired by an individual after studying a particular subject or experiencing life’s lessons that provide an understanding of something.
Skill acquisition is the ability and capacity acquired through deliberate, systematic and sustained effort to smoothly and adaptively carry out complex activities or job functions involving ideas.
There are different levels of education which one undergoes. They are the primary, secondary and tertiary institutions. The primary aspect of education is being sanctioned with the responsibility of the primary knowledge. That is to say that the child is expected to know some certain elementary things in this very level in order not to have difficulty in the secondary stage.
Secondary level of education goes more deeper in impartation of knowledge. With the knowledge gained or acquired in this stage, the individual is in a good position to carry out several tasks that might be given to them.
The higher or tertiary institution, which is the last in the levels of education, is the highest in teaching and setting. Here, students are is in a good stead to become well established or equipped academically if they are serious-minded.
The importance or role of education cannot be over-emphasised. It plays a vital role in the growth and development of the country. It helps people become bitter citizens.
This is to say that educated people, aware of the socio-economic scenario of the country, can help in the progress of the country.
Education helps in deciding who to vote for in order to make a positive difference in the economy of a country. It also gives one the enablement to decide the reason to vote for a particular party and not the other.
Education gives opportunities for employment. This is to say that unless a person is educated, he cannot get a worthwhile job.
It particularly helps single mothers to get decent jobs to support their children, hence get out of their ugly conditions.
Skill acquisition as earlier defined, which is the ability to acquire skill through deliberate, systematic and sustained effort, plays a remarkable role in building the nation and the individual.
There are different kinds of skills individuals can engage in to help themselves and improve on their standard of living. These include making of bead, plating of hair, tailoring, mat-making, shoe-making, etc.
Our children should be advised and encouraged to acquire these skills and more while still studying in school. They should not only do academic work, skills should be acquired to give for various abilities to complement academic knowledge.
The role of skill acquisition in the building of our children and nation should not be under-minded. It does a lot of work and aids an individual to be self-employed in the future and gives those that have skills an edge over the unskilled ones.
Any person that is educated and skilled is in a better position in the society. That is to say that the person has more chances of being prosperous than the one who simply acquired academic knowledge without skills.
Education and skill acquisition makes one outstanding from others. As an educated person, you have hope of employment and as a skilled person, you can do your skill while waiting for white collar-jobs to come.
This is why skills should be introduced in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions to make us better citizens that will not wait for white-collar jobs alone, but engage other endeavours that will provide food on our table. By this, our dependence on paid jobs will reduce drastically.
Nigeria should have functional education that will build the citizenry in all aspects of life to enable them face challenges that will come their way.
In order to be financially placed in the society today, one should not only study book, but to also learn specific skills, that are relevant to the society. This has become necessary given the present poor state of the economy.
