Governor  Dave Umahi of
Ebonyi State has expressed sadness over the death of nine persons in a motor accident which occurred at the “I35 axis” along Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway.
Our correspondent reports that the accident involved an articulated vehicle conveying stone-chippings and a coaster bus reportedly heading to Ikom, Cross River, from Lagos.
The front tyre of the articulated vehicle reportedly burst, forcing it to run into the bus and the resultant impact set both vehicles ablaze.
A statement signed by Umahi’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Emma Anya, and made available to newmen in Abakaliki said that the governor described the incident as “saddening’’.
According to the statement, Umahi said that the incident was regrettable as it occurred at the same spot where 10 Labour Party supporters lost their lives in an accident 10 months ago.
“I advise motorists to avoid speeding and check the conditions of their vehicles before plying the highways.
“It is unfortunate that we have allowed avoidable accidents to occur and I enjoin motorists to be patient and cautious while driving,” the governor was quoted as saying.
He urged the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to deploy more officers on highways in Ebonyi to check drivers’ recklessness.
“I also urge the National Road Transport Workers Union and the National Association of Road Transport Owners to intensify enlightenment of their members on safe driving.
“I wish the survivors quick recovery and pray for the repose of the souls of the dead.
“I also pray God to grant the families of the victims the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss of their loved ones,” Umahi said.
