Southern Govs’ Wives Preach Against Child Labour
The two-day inaugural
meeting of the Southern Governors’ Wives Forum has ended in Owerri, Imo State with a decision to promote issues on health and child labour.
These were part of the resolutions adopted in a communique at the end of the meeting and read by the wife of Ogun State Gov., Mrs. Olufunso Amosun.
The forum agreed, among other things, to pursue girl-child education and deal with child labour and health issues while promoting women empowerment initiatives, as well as build a secretariat.
It also resolved to impact positively on the lives of women, children, youths and the vulnerable in their local communities and beyond.
The forum, the communique said, would act as a mechanism to strongly support the programmes and activities of the wife of the President, Hajia Aisha Buhari.
The forum also resolved to complement the giant strides of the southern governors for the overall development of the society and promote unity and peaceful co-existence among the member states.
The southern governors’ wives had earlier paid a courtesy call on Gov. Rochas Okorocha at the Government House, Owerri, who advised them to ensure peace among their husbands, irrespective of political affiliations.
Okorocha said that political affiliations played no role in effective governance and provision of dividends of democracy to the people.
Earlier, the Chairperson of the Forum, and wife of the Imo Governor, Mrs Nkechi Okorocha, commended her counterparts for finding time within their busy schedules to attend the meeting which, according to her, was in the interest of Nigeria in general.
She said the task before the forum was enormous and as such, required the support of their husbands and the commitment of the members.
Okorocha listed some of her achievements so far to include the construction of two-bed room bungalows for indigent widows across the 27 local governments of the state and support to her husband in giving free education to indigenes of the state.
Some of the governors’ wives expressed gratitude at the warm reception accorded them by the government and the people of Imo State.
They thanked Okorocha and their husbands for giving them the opportunity to serve and promised to continue to contribute their quota in the overall interest of the forum.
Those in attendance were the Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu (Abia), Mrs Monica Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Mrs Sherifat Aregbesola (Osun), Mrs Martha Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom), and Mrs Edith Okowa (Delta).
