The 10 wrestlers
representing the country at the Olympic qualifiers in Algeria are targeting to qualify for the Rio Olympic Games, a top official from the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) said.
Daniel Ohaike , the Technical Director, NWF yesterday in Abuja told newsmen that he was hopeful that many wrestlers would qualify for the Games.
The qualifiers will hold from April 1 to April 4 in Algiers. The 10 wrestlers will arrive in Algiers on Wednesday fully prepared; they will have time for more preparations ahead of the competition.
“The 10 wrestlers are made up of five females in freestyle, four freestyle males and a Greco-Roman fighter.
“They have all been taught all the necessary techniques; and we are going to correct our mistakes, so that we are confident of a good outing in Algeria.
“They will come back with medals, and I’m confident that more of our wrestlers will qualify for the Olympics,’’ Ohaike said.
Ohaike said the wrestlers would make the country proud for the second time this year.
“Earlier this month, 12 of them participated in a Senior African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt and won 10 medals.
“Four of them won gold medals, three silver and three won bronze. I am confident they will reproduce their performance in Egypt. We are sure they will make us proud again,’’ he said.
The 2016 Summer Games will hold in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from August 5 to 21.
