Provide Holding Bay For Trucks, Stakeholder Urges RSG
The Rivers State Govern
ment has been urged to provide holding bay for petroleum tankers, trucks and trailers outside the metropolis in order to check indiscriminate parking on major roads in Port Harcourt and its environs.
The Chairman, Rivers Transport Co-operative Union Limited, Comrade Enoye Sunday, made the call in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt.
Sunday said provision of such holding bay would help reduce traffic gridlock usually caused by these heavy duty vehicles on the roads.
According to him, the Rivers State Government should look for a comfortable place where such tankers, trailers or trucks will be called upon for loading.
He also suggested that a time frame in which the heavy duty vehicles should ply the roads, possibly at night when traffic will be lighter and less congested by other road users.
“If they can be restricted to a time frame, it will help a lot in the direction of traffic congestion and reduce accidents and other menace by these drivers,” Sunday noted.
The union chairman also hinted that to ensure strict compliance, government should set up a body to monitor the movements of these vehicles, while drivers should be sensitised on the need to allow free-flow of traffic.
