Basketball players line up before a match
Rivers Hoopers Basket
ball Club captain, Ikashi Ochoma has drawn curtains on his playing career.
Ochoma who led the team to back-to-back league titles in 2011 and 2012 has subsequently joined the management team of the former League Champions where he will perform the role of the team’s secretary in the upcoming 2015/2016 DSTV Basketball League season.
Ochoma who has been captain of the team since the 2010 League play-offs expressed how fulfilled he was to lead the team inspite of the challenges faced by the team in the past.
“It’s been good, great, good memories, it was okay. God gave me strength, God gave me grace and I worked with level headed players, so it wasn’t much of a problem”, Ochoma said.
Speaking on his new role, the former captain is happy to move on to a bigger responsibility.
“I accept it with all humility and gratefulness to God, I don’t think it’s something I should be disappointed about because I believe I have given a lot of my time, energy, talent and everything to basketball for Rivers State, so moving on is no problem for me”.
“I won’t say I have always wanted it but I won’t say I will shy away from it, so you know once you are into sports it’s natural you want to move forward, players to coaches, management whatever. It is going to be fun still being part of the team, working with the team because Hoopers is like my home whether am in it or out, am always in it, Hoopers is just for me,” he stated.
One of Ochoma’s first tasks will be to name a new captain for the team in time before the start of the season this Friday. In the meantime, Tamma Ziffa who was previously the Team’s Secretary will now be in charge of logistics.
