State Governor, Justice Suzzette Nyesom Wike has commended women in the state, especially the Women League of Christ Church Interdenominational for their dogged fight to wipe out cancer in the state.
Suzzette said this Sunday, during the church service to mark the International Women’s Day celebration at the Christ Church Interdenominational, Forces Avenue, Port Harcourt.
The governor’s wife, who took the only reading of the service lesson from Exodus 34:29-35, commended the Christ Church Women’s League for the celebration of Women’s Day, and further thanked them for their dogged fight to combat cancer in the state through the setting up of a Mammogram Centre, billed for inauguration, soon.
According to Suzzette, “Mothering is not something that comes easily, it is a very daunting task. It is not easy to be a mother, especially in pregnancy; looking after your husbands, children and keeping the house. It takes special grace of God to be a woman, and Proverb 31:1-2 says it all.”
She called on the men to do everything possible to support the women, and enjoined the women to seek the men’s cooperation in order to ensure peace and harmony in homes.
The governor’s wife emphasized that men must love their wives for peace in the family, and listed ways men should show love to their wives, including appreciation, encouragement and support at all times.
She also solicited the support of all Rivers people, especially women towards the forthcoming March 19 re-run elections, urging mothers not to allow their children to be used by politicians to destabilize the state.
Stressing that the issue of insecurity in the state has been there over the years, she enjoined all to continue to pray for Chief Nyesom Wike to improve the security situation in Rivers State.
Earlier, the Christ Church Women’s League President, Mrs Mabel Okemini,  presented a special gift to the governor’s wife, and intimated her on the achievements of the league.
Okemini hinted that the women had built and equipped a Mammogram Centre to help combat cancer in the state, and promised to invite the governor’s wife to commission the centre soon.
On her part, the Hon Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Ukel Oyaghiri, thanked the women, youth groups and non-governmental organisations for their support, and expressed profound gratitude to the Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike, for his untiring efforts in the transformation of the state and various appointments of women into government.
Oyaghiri noted that the ministry organised the service to commemorate the 2016 International Women’s Day with the theme: “Planet 50-50 for 2030, Step It Up For Gender Equality,” adding that a number of other activities have been lined up, including visit to charity homes, and state rally/ground finale at Sharks Football Club Stadium, Port Harcourt.
In her sermon, Mrs Virginia Davids called on the state government to be proactive in fighting criminality in the state.
In the sermon from John 9:1-4, titled, “I must work the work of Him that sent me,” she said the only way any government or people could achieve relative peace was to anchor their lives totally on Christ.
