The  Nigeria Institute of
Architects (NIA), has identified substandard building materials as the reason for the recent increasing incidences of building collapse.
National President of NIA, Mr Tonye Braide, declared this in a chat in Port Harcourt recently.
Braide stated the worrisome trend was traceable to the influx of substandard building materials, which he said were being deliberately imported into the country.
He called for urgent steps against the production and importation of substandard building materials to avert the looming grave consequences.
According to him, “the rate at which substandard building materials have flooded  the Nigerian markets is alarming and urgent steps must be taken to redirect the construction industry in line with accepted standard and specifications”.
He expressed the readiness of the institute to partner with any relevant body to develop standard building codes to curb the recently increasing building collapse and bring about lasting solution to the problem of collapse.
He also called for a process of working out modalities for quality assurance on building materials, while charging Nigerians on patriotism.
He emphasised that the fight against substandard materials and services must be seen as a fight for all Nigerians and indeed all who reside in Nigeria, so as to reduce the influx of substandard products into the Nigerian market
