The Federal Airport
Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), says to properly fence the 22 airports owned by the federal government of Nigeria, the authority would need about N22bn (twenty two billion naira)
According to FAAN’s spokesman, Mr Yakubu Dati, each of the 22 airports is about 50 kilometers long and would require heavy investments for all of them to be properly fenced according to the International and Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), recommended practices.
He explained that ICAO had recommended that countries fence their airports to ensure safety of humans, cargo and equipment at all times.
Of the 22 airports owned by the Federal Government, only four international Airports in Lagos, Kano, Abuja and Port Harcourt are  partially fenced. The remaining 18 airports are not fenced,  a situation which Dati explained had led to encroachments on the lands by some indigenes.
He said the 22 airports across the nation occupy 500 kilometeres of land mass and ICAO security guidelines  stipulates that all airports must be secured with double perimeter fancies.
Dati, however, assured that there were other security measures FAAN has taken in line with international best practices to boost security and safety within the nation’s airports.
He noted that airport as an enabler to the nation’s economy contributes about $1billion annually while also providing more than 300,000 jobs, and stressed that the government would continue to ensure growth in the sector.
