An activist, Mrs
Chinelo Ameachina, has called on civil society organisations to prioritise programmes that educate women on their rights.
She made the call in an interview with newsmen on Thursday in Hadejia, Jigawa.
Ameachina, who is the manager of Association for the Advancement of Women, a Jigawa-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), said that it was imperative to create awareness among women on their rights.
She said that sensitising the women would enhance gender equality and deal with the spate of social violence against women in the country.
“Sensitisation is very important to enable women know their rights. We should focus more on enlightenment activities to bring them to line.
“Awareness creation is essential to empower women and prepare them to contribute to the well being of their families and the society,” she said.
Ameachina stressed the need for more collaboration between community-based organisations and local government councils to improve literacy rate among rural women.
She also called on Jigawa government to support economic empowerment programmes initiated by her organisation to improve social and economic well-being of women in the state.
“Empowerment of women, both educational and livelihood skills is paramount; some of them that have businesses could be supported with finances and entrepreneurial skills”.
Ameachina also called for comprehensive engagement of women in skill acquisition programmes instituted by government.
According to her, such skill acquisition programme will empower women and enable them to enjoy some level of freedom and economic independence.
